When the Silence Screams My Name
Amy Feinman 1986 (Santa Cruz)
The silence screams my name as I cry out to you
Why don't you speak to me, so I can just do
Do all of the things that bring me joy
Am I just a pawn or is this just a ploy?
Are you watching my life simply pass on by?
Do you watch with compassion or is God just a lie?
I've cried out to you and spilled out my angst
But silent you remain as I battle the tanks
The tanks and the bombs they follow my feet
What more can I do for an answer to meet?
Silence once more as I battle on
When, if ever, will this turmoil be gone?
I take a deep breath and I continue on
Watching and waiting for the pain to be gone
It sticks and it stays inside of my bones
It intertwines my body, like sharp bits of stone
When will it end when I've cried out your name?
Is there hope for the future? Or is it just shame?
I cry out your name, once more just in case
There has to be an exit, a way out of this place
I cry out your name and the silence remains
Sometimes it feels like I'm going insane
Is there a glimmer of hope that is out there still?
If you are God himself, I will follow your will
Until then I will find the power within
And pray I don't get judged in haste for my sin
Mystery remains about heaven or hell
If you've never been there, then how can you tell?
The will to survive carries me through
And one day I will transform and live life anew
A whisper of wind rushes through my ear
And finally a voice that says I am near
About this poem
I wrote this poem during a time when I was searching for an answer from God. Many people talk about the blessings of God, but not many talk about the anguish and turmoil we can go through when God is silent.
