The First Three

Robert Joseph Mattingly 1957 (Brookline, Massachusetts)

What this wall will do,
Is give me great peace
Seeing my nephew
And first two, each niece.

I don't have a kid.
They were like my own
By the things we did.
Now they are all grown.

Yes, I taught all three,
How to swim and drive.
This never leaves me,
While I'm still alive.

Do I want a kid
Of my very own?
No, 'cause what we did,
Rather be alone.
