Remembering My First Mister

REMEMBERING MY FIRST MISTER

"Death touched her lips
To say goodbye and
To always remember
The man who touched her first
Touched her with his heart
That is forever hers
My first mister"
 - Jennifer Wilson (Leelee Sobieski)

J, you prowl and spy through misfit windows
      At R, locked in a mid-life bolero
Misfits of misfits from obverse extremes
Friends first lost but for his innuendo
Young and not young, your flesh and souls narrowed
Will you solemnize your diffident leaps?

His ‘square’ reprise "Somewhere Beyond the Sea,"
Song for you who might never be special
Anthem for two silently mismatched breeds

Late night gala, a toast to your family
Disarmed. Disclosed. Distinctly meant to be.

About this poem

"Remembering My First Mister" is a Curtal Sonnet, a form developed by Gerard Manley Hopkins. The poem is an ekphrastic work, allowing that motion pictures are art. It begins with a poetic quote from the movie. This poem interprets the emotions of two very different misfits who are dissapointed with their lives but find their unlikey way to an intimate friendship. It tells a poetic story starting with solitude and ending with fellowship. The hopeful theme is representative of many who feel an estrangement from our society.
