the smile that broke this wall of sadness and despair

The smile that broke this wall of sadness and despair.

She wore her sadness like a thick heavy coat .
It protected her and smothered her in equal parts.
Too heavy to bear and too restrictive to remove.
It was as familiar as her own face in the mirror.
She was made in shades of grey .
The colour of bleakness.
Invisible to most people.
She passed through life like a shadow.
Unseen and unheard.
Like the lingering smoke of a passers by cigarette.

Suddenly there was something in her path .
A tiny human way down low .
Looking up with a beaming smile.
In her tiny hand she held a flower.
I picked this for you to make you smile she tells you.
Holding it out with pride.
Her eyes shining.
You can see her heart in her face .
She knows nothing but love you think .
It glows around her like a halo .
Protecting her from the world.
You feel your heart melting from the warmth of her love.
So pure and innocent.
You smile back at her , returning her love.
And take the flower .
Thank you you say sincerely.
And in an instant your coat is gone and for the first time in so long you feel the sun against your skin. And it is beautiful..

About this poem
