Back To The Start

17.  I suddenly now have a boyfriend, friends that I know I can always trust, and two new dogs
It all feels to rushed and sudden but nice
I enjoy it now but I ultimately hope nothing goes wrong
16.  Two girls in gym seem really nice
I don’t tell them my dog had just died, I don’t even want to talk about it
I meet a nice boy
15.  I have a fun time with my friends the night before Halloween
But I always seem to set myself up for failure when I let them make me upset
I’m starting to think they don’t like me
14.  I adjust my mask as it itches my face
It’s awkward in my class of five
It’s been hard to get school work done since doing it online but I’m sure I’ll start working normal again soon
13.  I skip rocks with my two childhood neighbor friends and laugh over nonsense
It’s been a while since we hung out with just the three of us
The one boy mentions how we’re getting off of school because of some new disease
I hope we can be together like this more often
12. I think I’m starting to like this boy
I can’t be sure though since I’ve never actually liked anyone before
I refuse to tell any of my friends, they’ll make fun of me for sure
11. I start to notice kids are dressing more mature than me
I don’t think I’m going to wear headbands anymore, although I have like 30
I asked a girl to sign my yearbook and she said no, I didn’t realize other kids could be so mean
10.  Rumors have been going around that our grade has to watch “the video”
I don’t understand how girls can bleed everyday and not die
I don’t want to grow up
9.  This new game “Oreo” has been introduced into our school
Me and my friends always play it because if you lose you have to ask someone out
But our principal announced over the loudspeaker that they’re banning the game
We still play it
8.  I finally did a back handspring by myself
Though, it was when my gymnastics coach stopped spotting me
I didn’t know he was going to move his hand
I am now too scared to do a back  handspring
7.  This girl in dance won’t stop sashaying into me
It’s really getting on my nerves
6.  After my friend goes home I beg my dad if I could go down the sledding hill just one more time by myself
As I’m flying down the hill I smash my face directly into a tree once I reach the bottom
I screamed so loud I think the entire neighborhood heard me
My mom gave me an ice pop when I got home

3.  I start taking swimming lessons with my new friend Luke and his little sister Remy
I love learning how to swim but my swimming instructor scares me
2. My mom carries me into this white room
She sits me down next to these pretty flowers
I tilt my head down to look at them and I hear a click followed by a flash of light behind me

About this poem

Each line is a year of my life starting from 17 and ending at 0. I tell the most memorable thing that happened to me that year, whether it be meaningful or just something simple I happened to remember.
