Oh, Grand Youth!
Oh, grand youth!
Those woods were a wonder,
drawing footprints with sticks
we told our mothers
we saw bigfoot;
we drifted the pond and
fed the ant hill the sticks,
those woods were summer’s
home to a boy
now grown. I stand
at the edge and
wonder again
if bigfoot visits any other
boys in this wood, or
who drifts the pond, or
feeds the ants
Oh, grand youth!
Those woods were a wonder.
About this poem
I grew up with a best friend who lived out on a large property with woods and pond along with horses and cows. I spent a lot of time there as a elementary age child. I've since lost touch with this friend, and often when I am driving through the country and see a property like his, I stop and look momentarily and am reminded of our youthful adventures.
