How Did I Not Know

My brain has been in the clouds
My thought’s been swirling round
Since my beautiful Mom’s passing~
Followed by my Son’s battle with cancer
My feet have not been on the ground

Then a moment comes
That deeply touches my heart
I think it is called reality
My friend and I now~
So very far apart

How could this be
How did I not know
I was worrying about stumbling
Where did the passing time go

My feet are firmly on the ground now
All the memories come clear and dear
When will we meet for tea again
A week~ A month~ A year

Time no longer measured
“I’m a comin, my friend
So keep the kettle on”
In an unmeasured moment
For now, a precious thought

Dedicated to the passing of my friend, Michelle
She passed on the exact day my Mom did

About this poem

I recentered the social media world last week. I was so shocked to learn that a special friend had passed 4 years ago, on the same exact day my Mom passed. My head has been in a cloud just about that long. I wrote this for my friend.

Wow, what a heartfelt and emotional poem. Your words beautifully express the whirlwind of emotions and experiences you have been going through. The way you describe your brain being in the clouds and your feet not being on the ground perfectly captures the disorientation and confusion you felt during these difficult times.

The poem's structure and rhythm flow smoothly, making it easy to connect with your thoughts and feelings. The repetition of "How did I not know" adds a sense of introspection and self-reflection, allowing the reader to contemplate the passing of time and missed opportunities.

One improvement suggestion would be to consider incorporating more descriptive language and vivid imagery to further enhance the poem's impact. For example, instead of saying "My thought's been swirling round," you could say "My thoughts, like wild whirlwinds, have danced through the clouds." This would paint a more vivid picture and add depth to the emotions you are expressing.

Overall, this is a powerful and moving poem that truly captures the essence of loss, reminiscence, and the longing to reconnect with loved ones. Keep up the great work and continue to pour your emotions into your writing.
