Complimentary colors

She said that she liked colors
The day she held my hand
And I was red like fire
She was yellow like the sand

on the couch together
I asked which color was I
Like a warm orange sunset
Was her soft reply

And when we snuck away
To we’re we were not seen
So that we could kiss
She said that she felt green

We were purple when we laughed
And silver when we cried
and then we would feel gold
When our tears had dried

The more we fought, the dimmer
Our colors had become
Until one day she had announced
That she and I were done

She called us complimentary
That side by side we’d shine
But all we made turned muddy
When we would combine

To me, it all seemed simple
I said a brown is color too
She said I wanted many colors
But I didn’t want brown with you

About this poem

Complimentary colors are those opposite on the color wheel. When placed together they make each other look brighter but mixed together they create brown. I thought it was an interesting metaphor for two people who seemingly look so well together, but never work out in practice.
