Dinner Guests

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

Looking where I’m going
But remembering where I’ve been
I cannot look inside myself
But I can let God in
He’s coming with a shotgun
And he’ll clear the forest floor
He’s hunting for dust bunnies
At the rascally rabbit store
He’ll clear off every shelf of dolls
And make a careful search
He’s looking for the hidden sins
They try to bring to church
He’ll hunt down every rabbit
And he’ll skin and clean them too
But then he’ll bring them to his house
He’s making rabbit stew
The smell that lingers in the kitchen
Will not always be pleasant
It smells a lot like me and you
It’s more like fish than pheasant
And that’s why we burn incense
When we sacrifice to God
We have to make the house smell nice
We entertain a lot
