False start

Kim Franks 1964 (Hereford)

In this land
of long white clouds
the flowers
get confused
in spring
and there are countless
blooms
of everything
from blossom
to fresias
all too early,
too eager

over enthusiastic and
betrayed
in a way
by way of banking on warmth
that will often
surprise

A false start
remembering
last year

The bees
dozy and droning
looking for blue
a cold color
with yellow hues

and butterflies
frozen like petals in snow
curling
to the ozone glow.

About this poem

This poem is about New Zealand and the ozone hole above it. In the spring it is suddenly very hot so all the flowers grow at the same time. Coming from England it has a warmer climate but the flowers rythmn is so different due to the heat of the sun and the warmth of the ground.
