We Cannot Build on Sand

We Cannot Build on Sand

Selfishness and greed cannot be the basis
Of a society that is just and caring and good,
Love and sharing will not just “trickle down”:
The traits that enable a rich man to gather cash
Make it difficult for him to share his stash.
In this idolatry of metal and plastic and wood
There will always be a poor section of town...

Materialism cannot fulfill and satisfy
The human heart and soul and mind,
For man is above all else a spiritual being:
The traits that lie at his essence and core
Make it impossible to stop short of heaven’s door:
The only happiness and peace he’ll ever find
Derive from a holy way of living and seeing...

Generosity and selflessness are the foundations
Upon which an equitable economy can be erected,
Yielding a sustainable and humane distribution
Of the gifts God bestows upon this earth,
(To which we’re entitled by fact of birth ).
Of the services and goods man has perfected,
Welcoming everyone’s creative contributions.
