An officer’s worst call
I walked into the room not prepared for what I saw;
As my knees hit the floor I asked God, why did you give me this call
I worked on his tiny body until there was no more work to do
Crying for this stranger who I never even knew
My eyes filled with tears as I stared at his tiny face
I wanted someone to blame for what had just taken place
Thirteen pounds and Twenty-six inches of this child's shortened life
Pierced straight through my heart just like a knife
I can't go to sleep without seeing his face
My dreams take me back to that horrible place
For this little stranger who touched so deep in my heart
Was the one call of duty that tore me completely apart
People think were inhuman caused from the work we do
We are called cynical and heartless, but it's not true
We feel and we hurt the same as others do
But we hide our emotions because we are expected to
You may never see us shed any tears
And you may never see us show our fears
But know as our shift comes to an end and it's time for us to go
Every call we've worked that day follows us home
Some we forget and never think of again
But others stay in our hearts and will remain within.
