Windows to the World Unseen : Dancing on the Edges of Love

Her essence flowed like the breaking waves,
Crashing upon the shores of my desire.
I longed to dive into her depths unknown,
Yet trembled at the darkness she held inside,
Fearing her riptide would pull me down,
And I would drown in her unfathomed soul.
What lurked in the shadows of her heart?
Did mysteries too heavy for me to hold
Swim in her currents, longing to be known?

I paced the edges, wandering, wondering,
Hoping to glimpse what lay beneath the surface.
But the more I studied her tides and turns,
The more elusive her secrets remained.
She was a riddle written in a language
I had yet to learn to read or speak or grasp.
Her eyes were windows to a world unseen,
Filled with creatures, fears, and poems unknown,
All shimmering below consciousness' grasp.

As waves retreat, revealing treasured shells,
Some days her laughter lifted veils to show
Glimpses of her radiant, primal depths—
Jewels of wit and wisdom, shining strange,
Washed up from shipwrecks of past hurt and loss
To gleam within her protean surfaces.
Were these doorways left open just for me
To slip past walls and swim where others feared?
Or were they siren calls to crash upon?

For I had loved the surfaces before,
And longed to worship only liquid light.
Why dive into unknowable depths,
Seeking pearls while risking undertows?
All I needed bloomed outside her reefs
In the corals of her external grace.
Her beauty glittered bright enough for me.
Why wade into domains where monsters swam?
The shallows were familiar, safe, and calm.

Yet though she drew me deeper towards her heart,
I clung to edges, stared but never swam,
Loving the waves but not the hidden sea.
While others dove to grasp her mystery,
And drowned within her wild, poetic tides,
I paced and watched, desiring but afraid.
What did I fear in her unfathomed soul?
Did I dread the darkness or the light below?
Was I a coward or discerning the shore?

The waves still break invitingly for me—
Her eyes still call me to redeem my fear.
But now I understand she has no end,
No final secret to unfurl below.
Her mystery is her alone to keep and share.
My task is not to grasp her, but to swim,
Learning to love her changing depths at play.
To float within her swells, her passion swims,
No longer fearing where her currents stray.

Now drawn by swelling tides of her desire,
I venture in, no longer paralyzed.
I need not reach the heart of her at all,
Just feel her break upon me, let her call,
And navigate her surfaces and storms
Content to love her ever-changing forms.
She is the sea. And I, a novice, swim.

About this poem

This poignant poem explores the complexity of desire, fear, and the evolving nature of love. The speaker grapples with the mystery within the person they admire, hesitating to plunge into the unknown depths. The metaphor of the sea vividly conveys the allure and uncertainty, questioning whether the surface allure is enough or if the risk of exploring deeper is worth the potential turbulence. Ultimately, the poem embraces acceptance, acknowledging that understanding and possessing the entirety of someone's mystery may be impossible, yet the beauty lies in navigating the ever-changing currents of their being.
