Under The Stairs

Anthea Jones 1967 (Slough)

The outside has grown colder,
Darker and quieter.
My humans are upstairs
Safely tucked up and cosy.
Mummy Honey and Grandma Dotty
Are at their sides, guarding.
Aunty Smudge lies on the couch
And I'm sure she's snoring.

I find my refuge
Under the stairs
On a soft, warm bed.
I snuggle down and take in
A deep,  long breath.
I can smell Mummy,  Grandma
And Aunty Smudge too.
I sniff again,
Yes, I smell my brother Apache.
If I concentrate hard enough
I smell my other brothers too.

All my memories
Start where I was born,
In my refuge
Under the stairs.

About this poem

My poem is written from the perspective of my 1 year old American Akita puppy, Lily, shortly after her litter brother Apache had to be rehomed. We all miss him so much.
