Chameleon Eyes

Lacey Moore 1987 (United States)

October 23

Chameleon eyes go from the bluest skies to green at the drop of a hat,
Like they’re tantalized and change their mind depending who they’re looking at.
I knew from the first time you lifted those shades and I caught a gaze
Of those in between sea green and baby blue eyes,
I knew right then, this was it, I was falling in love for the rest of my life.
I’d lose myself in those eyes, my words ceasing to exist,
I go weak at the knees,
Every internal switch flipped.
When those eyes see me and I see that sea green penetrating my soul,
A memory tugs relentlessly, the damn thing just won’t let go.
Reminding me of days of old when I could look in them anytime,
Back when I was yours and you were mine,
Before I had a reason to rhyme.
Before parts of you besides your eyes started to change,
While I stayed loving you in the same place.
I waited and waited for you to come back,
And once you did, it was too late for that.
Now all I have is a book with twenty years worth of lines
About that guy with the blue green eyes.
But late at night when I close mine,
I can’t help what comes to mind.
Flashing before me like a silent film,
Pulling me like a quasar to another realm.
It’s my battle I long ago gave up the fight,
Dreaming night after night about the boy with chameleon eyes.
