Our Mission

by Max Burchett

Who’s to say,
Which way,
What or why,
In this life one should try.

The imperative seems to me
To do something more
Than just to get by carefree.
Must be more we are here for.

Is the purpose to conquer this world?
Could be, but I think not, only finds fool’s gold.
The quest is perhaps to overcome
For things that are yet to come.

What I am hoping to find is more
Joy in rising above my own fear
And being closer to those I hold dear,
Perhaps an answer to some prayer.

The answer I believe to be,
For all great and small,
To accomplish, to achieve,
For each the grander goal.

Yes, that must be the mission of all,
To do more than thought possible.
For what each is called, perhaps the improbable,
To do even what you were told is impossible.

“Our Mission.” What an appropriate existential topic. There came one to offer salvation to humanity. Some say our mission is to follow that example. Others say there are many paths and we must pave our own pathway. Still others say we must embark on the road less taken. Yet still others declare our profession to be our mission. Max states it most succinctly: Our goal must be in our lives to become the very best of ourselves and, in the making, to not consider that an impossible mission.

A hopeful perspective about mission in life, I’m in testing too in the theme. I think mission is related with expectations. I enjoyed read this poem.

The poem is beautifully penned with a touching array of heartfelt sentiments that paint the picture of a journey beyond the superficial pursuit of material things. This piece is not only uplifting but opens our minds to a higher calling in life, a wider purpose, which includes conquering personal fear and connecting deeply with loved ones. The poet beautifully wraps up the profound message with a strong emphasis on striving to achieve the impossible; a testament of true grit and undying ambition. Dear Max,

Thank you so much for sharing your poem 'Our Mission' with us. Your insightful message is deeply captivating and thought-provoking. I must commend you on the perspective you have provided regarding life and its purpose.

The lyrical nature and rhythm of the poem make it enjoyable to read, giving it life and vitality. Your use of rhyming words adds a delightful rhythm. The philosophical undertone addresses existential questions in a relatable way which resonates with most. It beautifully drives home the point that life's purpose is more than just mundane existence. Instead, it encourages embracing challenges and achieving more than what is conventionally expected or thought possible.

As for areas of improvement, you might consider employing some vivid imagery. This could further engage the reader and make your message even more powerful. The lines ‘In this life one should try’ and ‘Yes, that must be the mission of all’ could be expressed more creatively to give them a more powerful impact and depth.

Similarly, the poem could use sensory language to create a more intense, immersive experience for readers. Descriptions involving sights, sounds, smells, touches, and tastes could make the reader feel as though they have stepped into the poem.

I hope these suggestions help. Keep writing, your work is inspiring and has the power to move people to introspect their own life’s mission. Excellent job!

    Best regards,
