Nightly Vigil

Cocooned in soft down and fleece he slumbers,
Bare foot exposed, clutching his stuffed monkey
Beneath a sleep-dead arm.  Heaven’s rages
Against the window pane go unnoticed.
Broken forks disturb no innocent dreams.
I keep vigil from my post at the door,
Silent guardian to this sleeping child.
Crooked shadows dance as heaven rumbles,
Flailing impotent against the cold glass.
He shifts his weight and sighs contentedly.
Within the room, all is quiet once more.
Closing the door but for a crack, night-light
From the hall, security should he wake,
I return to your arms, ready for sleep.
