Sonnet XI

Benjamin Brantley 1984 (Winston-Salem, North Carolina)

I hath traveled the world in search of love
Yet hath I not found such an one as thee
For whom the sunshine lights heaven above
And whose lips doth drip as sweetest honey

Shall I recall the day that we first met?
Thou wert all radiant and full of gleam
The day we both were acquainted as yet,
Two neighborly bedfellows, in a dream.

The rapture of thy kiss is evident
In all ways leading unto paradise
Yet, I reckon that some men do lament
Who hath not tasted thy savory spice

God only knows, whether their hearts do break
For want of thee when true love is at stake.
