The Puppy With The Dead Bird

That time i first met you
Hand picked to your then taste
Younger than the other who’d gotten sick
You said she’d held a special place

Old enough to be brought into your world
Hitting the age of curiosity
But small enough to never have loved
Other than my own mother’s touch

You saw when i grew sad
So you gave me your old tee
You kept me close as you watched
Except it wasn’t much of a thought to me

You were just some person
I’m running in circles around your gestures
So you made another lesson

You are teaching me to swim
But you threw me in
Now I can’t get out of the water

You’re full of surprises
But you only walked through the door
You’re who i’m dependent for

If you jump, i would
After all i’m still on the leash
You always called me good
What more would it take to be great

Had i been the pick of the litter
Or just something that’d always retreat to you

You told me i’m everything you adore
I jumped into your bed
Still somehow i ended up on the floor

Pushed me off a higher ledge
And the waters getting colder
But my love was greater than a grudge
And they said you are only bipolar

But the sun was out
And i’m still waiting on the ledge
So i’ll stay here and push the clouds away

Why did you, Why didn’t you
You should’ve, You could’ve

I’m still sleeping in your t-shirt
And she gets the closet
Did she live in the desert
No water or cloud in the sky

Cause when it storms you’ll find me
I’ll still be here
And when you call, I’ll come home
Because you still keep that picture of me

But you are cruel
And you’re aging
And you might be married

But i’ll still be at your door
Like a dog with a bird in its mouth

When you saw the dead little bird
You started Crying
Because you know the killer
Doesn’t  understand

About this poem

A metaphoric and melancholy poem. In a first person perspective of a girl being in a mentally toxic one-sided relationship, with someone who is older and takes advantage of her love. Alternatively, it is given in the sense that it is first person of a new puppy to its owner, naive and clueless, winning over and wanting to receive love. The poem itself is a metaphor with dual meanings and play-on-words to each sentence. My writing skills are based off of music and songwriting.
