Not Yet

‘You’ve seen it all, done it all’
They say of the elderly like me.
I want to scream,  ‘Not yet.’
They don’t know of my superpowers,
My mind encompassing the whole world,
My ability to fly to its farthest points
To trawl their treasures.
Constantly I mount mountains,
Dive deep into oceans, climb clouds,
Delve into forests, commune with wildlife.
I tiptoe amongst the sleeping,
Whisper words of solace and love,
Smooth furrowed brows and vanish
Before fresh eyes open to hopeful morns.
Sometimes I surprise the unsuspecting
when they see this young girl’s learning,
The honing of my superpowers,
The exercising, stretching of my mind
To embrace adventure, novelty, fulfillment.

Not even when I die will it be said of me,
She has seen it all, done it all,’ but
‘She did wear out several tee-shirts.

About this poem

I wrote this poem to vie against the trope that life is over for the elderly.
