Son to Father
David Coad 1969 (Canterbury)
Son to Father
To my Father
How the years shape a bond
In hope, in despair
In tragedy, in joy
In living, in dying
Pain is felt, anger is felt
And to show your true feelings is alien
To touch, to hug, to listen, to talk, to love
Yet how you look up to him
Knowing there can never be another
Knowing how hard you try, how long you toil
You’ll never be him
You’ll never be as good as him
You won’t even come close
So he felt with his father
And his father before
And so on down through generation uncounted
Yet there is always tomorrow
A time to see his magic
A time to listen to his wisdom
How his back bends under the load
Never a protest at working
The problem solver, the leader
The head of the house, the one you look up to
What footsteps to follow in
What a responsibility to have
Yet I take up the mantle
With strength, vigour, and pride
And look on him with affection
Thinking if I become half the man he is, I will be a man
For in his absence I must continue the legacy
Of father to son
Son to father
