Serenity

Fern and moss and lichens green,
Gilded in a sun bright beam,
Fairy gold and emeralds gleam,
Along the wooded way.

Twilight under brilliant blue,
Mortal cares in here are few,
Only one, I would that you,
Were with me here this day.

Out upon the hilltop clear,
High above brake, mead, and mere,
Strange horizons did appear,
And shimmer distantly.

Places past, and roads ahead,
Hidden ways, and paths untread,
Wondrous vistas glimpsed with dread,
If only you could see.

Later, fire flickers red,
Beside the hearth there’s drink and bread,
Soon I will be off to bed,
Where tranquil dreams are near.

Softly shadows gather round,
Still I dwell on what I found,
Happiness with sorrow bound,
And wish that you were here.

“Serenity” was the 14th poem I read last week, and the second one pinned. I was amazed by the diction (vivid, crisp) and the ballad form and unique meter and rhyme-scheme it used (aaab cccb etc).

I’m not quite sure why, but the story of the poem reminded me of Yeats’ poem “The Song of Wandering Aengus”—that is to say, mythic and enchanting.

Excellent work, Mr. Wagner. You are a force to be reckoned with.
