Hope's Ending
Jennifer Marie' Brigman 1984 (asheville)
sitting at a coffee shop, it's raining outside.
watching all the pretty people as they go passing by.
black umbrellas all around
black trench coats too.
a red umbrella in the crowd
and underneath it, you.
your eyes are the only eyes i've seen all day
that are not dull and glazed
like nothing is behind them,
like nothing is inside them.
like they're souls have fled...
all you hollow people, go running to you steeple.
your million-dollar box, your refuge from the storm.
you pray about your favorite cars,
you pray to wishing wells and stars.
you pray about all the clothes you've worn...
sitting at a stoplight, it's still raining outside.
watching all the little sheep as they go bleating by.
then something catches out of the corner of my eye.
i can't take it any longer, and i start to cry.
it's you there admist the crowd.
underneath a black umbrella too.
i'd hoped i wasn't the only one left
oh....how i held all my hope in you...
your eyes dull and glazed like nothing is inside them,
like nothing is behind them.
like your soul has fled.
"This is the way the world ends
this is the way the world ends
this is the way the world ends
not with a bang, but a whimper."
About this poem
The last five lines are a quote from one of T. S. Elliots works called "Hollow Men." Written when I was a teen, it holds some truth still...
