Clovelly

Hard craggy rocks soften with shine
The street tempts further a storied decline
Sledges wait ready to carry and cart
For this is the way here in these parts

Trees and cliffs encourage us down
Combined they adorn the village it’s crown
And as we round the corner so tight
A harbour below shines proud in the light

The sea not rough but hints at its power
As it laps the grey wall exhausting a shower
Tumbled pebbles all forming a beach
We stare at the coastline far from our reach

A pub! A lion! Bathed in red
We rest sipping cider, clouding our heads
Content we walk out gazing above
A perfect time pocket, spent with my love

This day forever locked in our hearts
The steep journey up, now we must start
As we scale the cobbles we sometimes glance back
To savour the colours our modern lives lack

As we get to the top with our souls now restored
A thought for the donkeys who toiled before
So thank you for letting us into your net
This day at Clovelly we shall never forget
