Violet

Amanda Pugh 1984 (Galveston)

I looked down
I saw a color rarely seen in nature
Light purple
It was bright
Vibrant against the harsh road
So I wanted to touch it
I grabbed
I collected
A beautiful flower
That had been
Dicarded
But now
Seen again
For its beauty
Its violet presence
In this world
That upon inspection
Was riddled
With remnants or life
Such as
Slime,  mold, insects...
And sun bleached pedals.
It looks as if
It bloomed
It endured
It weathered
And most strikingly
It lived.
It bloomed.
It stretched
Out to the sun
The way it knew how
And became
Its best.
I saw that.
I recognized that.
I loved that.
Endure. Love. Live.

About this poem

As I look down and see a violet flower on the side of the road I realized how rare and beautiful it is, much like life itself.
