One more time

Holding her hand in the summer rain
I begin, and dance again.
Far from me are the truths beneath
I stop. Turn, in a breath release.
To this day I do not know yet
catching the breaths of gods
in a butterfly net

Something about this poem intrigued me. I had to decide amongst my top ten, and while the others I understood plainly, this one I kept coming back to reread over and over again. It’s meaning changing ever so slightly every time, every repetition made me want to read it “one more time.” I’m almost scared to share what I interpreted the meaning to be, because now it feels like it has become something sacred and intimate just for me alone. Very rare that a poem submitted in these contests make me feel this way. If it’s not a fluke, this is some master word craftsmanship. The discipline in word choice and keeping it concise made it hit harder than any of the longer poems this contest. I simultaneously would love to hear more about the inspiration behind this poem, while also never wanting to know so that it remains special. Either way, it certainly captured my attention and it had a profound impact on me. We’ll done!
