Look for me in the Sunsets

I've never much liked sunsets.
They symbolize endings, change;
The last attempt at daylight before night takes over and the world goes to sleep.
Before the peace of being the only person awake can become a presence.

So when I die, don't look for me in the sunsets.
Look for me in the storms;
In the booming thunder and flashes of brilliance that amazed me,
In the pelting rain and roaring wind that cradled me in it's arms, soothing my cries and shouldering my sorrows.

Look for me in my friends;
In the close whispers and soft touches that surrounded my pain,
In the glinting eyes, the mischief and humor that I so loved.

Look for me in the grief of nature;
In the death and mourning of crows and elephants,
Take comfort in the knowledge that you're not alone, that nature is living and dying all around you.

Look for me in the dark stillness of night;
In the way moonbeams enveloped my being, soft and gentle and kind,
In the way shadows were such perfect company, such good listeners and even better secret keepers.

Look for me where I was in my life;
You will find me best in those places, awaiting your arrival.

But still,
if you so wish,
look for me in the sunsets;
I will always be where you need me to be.
Even when I am gone.

About this poem

My friends and I were outside admiring a beautiful sunset, and one of them laughed and said "look for me in the sunsets man". And it reminded me of all the poems I'd read with that phrase, and how there's so many better places to look.
