The End Is Nigh

Sabu Cherian 1987 (Alleppey)

THE END IS NIGH

I fight,
You fight,
The whole world fights,
The end is nigh.

I grieve,
You grieve,
The whole world grieves,
The end is nigh.

I struggle,
You struggle,
The whole world struggles,
The end is nigh.

I destroy,
You destroy,
The whole world destroys,
The end is nigh.

We’ll all gain,
Hail, rain or pain,
If I conserve,
Why don’t you preserve?

How kind could nature be!
For some chances still lie;
In which to revel in its joy;
Should we fail to nurture again,
The end is nigh.

About this poem

Penned in the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic and the evolving climate change scenario, The End Is Nigh is a take on the viruses that inflict the human body and the mind. On a literal level, the poem is about the fight raged by the human being against the virus that engulfed the world. Figuratively, it forebodes the end of the world if the viruses of racism, sectarianism, parochialism, narrow-mindedness, xenophobia, among other continues to spread its tentacles in the human minds.
