One Morning, While You Slept

I was running before you woke.
Serpentine and sodden streets.
Branches bowing down
Humble, heavy with rain
Strong-backed, rooted ancients.
Seeing over the soaking canopy,
A hawk challenges the sun.
The trees, the hawk, the resting rain
Emblems of calm existence
Knowing all, or not knowing.
My sneakers slipped on asphalt.
A deer, sure-footed, startled me.
I was thinking of other things.
I was home before you woke.
