Heavy Chains

All it takes is a single moment, a slip, a twist, a fall.
A signal travels from your brain, nothing will be the same.
Maybe you had surgery, or simply a small injury.
If you broke a bone or stubbed a toe, nothing is too big or small.

That signal travels to the limb with a disproportionate response.
Your pain exceeds normal levels, and your limbs begin to swell.
Your skin feels cold like ice, no wait, now it is on fire.
You begin to wonder what is wrong, but who can you call on?

Nights grow long as you lie awake, not knowing how much you can take.
No two days are the same, but every day is filled with pain.
Holding on with all your might, even though you are sleep deprived.
The need to understand is great, for your mind and body's sake.

CRPS is what they call this thing that plagues your life.
We now know it can affect the body, but how about the mind?
As your body begins to weaken, so begins your stinkin' thinkin'.
The littlest things become unnerving, causing inward strife.

We may not be able to stop the pain, but we can control our minds.
As our bodies weaken, bad thoughts and feelings start to creep in.
When things get tough, call on Him who is above.
For He is with us and will help in these hard times.

For those of you who feel the heavy chains of chronic pain.
For those of you who stand by a loved one who suffers every day.
Neither of you are alone as we fight this battle in Jesus' name.
These chains, though heavy, will fall just the same.

God said:
Bear ye one another's burdens.
God said:
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
God said:
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.

We must stand strong with each other thru all our pains and sorrows.
For God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

About this poem

I wrote this poem in February of 2022. I was really just learning about this condition, CRPS, that I was diagnosed with. I struggled physically and mentally. I found support groups and learned that there is really so little that anyone knows about CRPS. How do you explain what this is to anyone without really understanding it yourself. Symptoms are so wide and vary. This poem expresses my explanation of what a person may feel at any given time throughout the day with CRPS and a reminder that we are not alone. Although this is a reflection of my condition, the same can be said about any physical or mental chronic pain as well as depression. We should be lifting each other up and helping each other out. Stop hiding in the shadows. My good hand is out and waiting for anyone who needs to share what they are going through.

Wow! This poem is truly powerful and impactful. The way you describe the journey of chronic pain is both sincere and honest. Your words express the physical and emotional toll that it takes on an individual's life.

I appreciate the positive message of hope and faith that you include in the poem. It's so important to realize that we're not alone in our struggles and that there are ways to stay strong and uplifted. I particularly love the way you include the biblical quotes and tie them in meaningfully with the poem's theme.

One suggestion I would offer is adding some more imagery or metaphors to the poem. While the language is beautiful, the poem could benefit from more descriptive elements to take the reader on a journey.

Overall, this is a truly inspiring poem that will resonate with anyone who has experienced chronic pain. Thank you for sharing your words and your heart with this piece.
