Coconut
Gillian Stanford-Cienfuegos 1987 (Arlington Heights, IL)
Your hair
Smelled like coconut
The breeze that day wrapped the scent of you around my face like a scarf
I inhaled it like a cigarette
The sky
Had storm clouds rolling in
I remember because it hardly rains in this God forsaken desert
But that December day, it did
Your eyes
Blue and shattered
Like the glass I swept up earlier that summer
When I broke your bedroom mirror
"That’s bad luck for seven years" you said
Your devious grin reflecting in the broken glass
Your hands
Bleeding and arched
From all the pointing
What an epic battle of blame
I should’ve just let you win
Your brother
And your mom
Acted like they never knew me
In all honesty they probably didn’t
But you did
…You did
It’s been 10 years
And it feels like yesterday
Memories tattooed on my skin
And I can’t shake the feeling
They may never go away
Like you did that day
And now
At 1:34am
I’m up remembering the smell of coconut
From your hair
It’s been so long and
I’d put my money on
That if you heard this
You wouldn’t care
If I teach my daughter anything
It’s that life just isn’t fair
Until then I’ll just recall
The smell of coconut in your hair
About this poem
I wrote this about someone I used to know better than myself. And someone who knew me.
