Transient Power: The Corruption Within
Power is a fleeting thing, it comes and goes
It can make one feel like they rule the world, or like they're all alone.
It starts with a simple goal,
To make a change and take control,
But soon enough it consumes us whole,
And we lose sight of our very soul.
Power attracts the worst in us,
And brings out the dark and unjust,
We forget the values we once held dear,
And lose our way in the endless fear.
The corrupting influence of power,
Can make the noblest soul go sour,
We become blinded by our own might,
And forget the difference between wrong and right.
But power is not permanent, it will fade,
And all that's left is the legacy we made,
We'll be remembered for what we did,
Not the power we held, or the sins we hid.
So let us use our power for good,
And always do what we know we should,
For in the end, it's not the power we had,
But the lives we touched that make us glad.
About this poem
The allure of power can be overwhelming, drawing us in with promises of control and influence. But as Lord Acton famously said, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." This poem reflects on the transience of power and the corrupting influence it can have on those who wield it. Inspired by the quote, "Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best," the poem reminds us that the legacy we leave behind is more important than the power we hold. In the end, it's the good we do and the lives we touch that truly matter. more »
