Drinker

Drinking, like an old friend,
Whose presence I cannot deny,
Who pulls me in with a warm embrace,
And soothes away the pain in my heart.

The taste of whiskey on my lips,
Is like music to my soul,
A sweet symphony that numbs the pain,
And makes the world seem whole.

The clink of glasses, the sound of laughter,
A room full of strangers,
But I am at home, surrounded by my brethren,
All bound by our love for the drink.

The nights bleed into days,
And the memories fade away,
But the feeling of peace,
Remains long after.

So I raise my glass to you,
Old friend,
Who never lets me down,
Who lifts me up
When I am down.

Drinking, like a free man without care
Is a way of life,
A rebellion against the norm,
A middle finger to society.

But in the end,
It is just me and the bottle,
Drunk on life,
And everything in between

Joe Strickland

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
