Visiting Père Lachaise
necrophiliac visitors /
stole your head /
but not your heart /
takers not makers /
grave robbers / nitrate poppers /
decoration and desecration /
black roses / narcissistic poses /
Tarot cards / votive shards /
Gitanes butts / pigeon guts /
epistles of love / of confession /
of remorse / reheated Rimbaud /
of course / they stole your head /
but not your soul / incense burns /
psychedelic urns / holy shrine /
yours not mine / easy to find /
tombstones as roadsigns /
cryptic graffiti of all kinds /
a religious pilgrimage / for my
generation / more important
than Lourdes / than Mecca /
than Fatima / the lizard king lies /
deep inside / sleeping the eternal
sleep / of the libertine / the
Dionysian dance man / cymbal rolls
of symbolism / ring out plangently /
over graveyard debris / they stole your
head / but not your legacy /
Mr. Mojo Risin' / no need to rise /
no need to rehearse / Gazzarri's went glam /
Whiskey a Go-Go / a Went-Went /
and today / under a drunken sky /
above a land of / three-hundred
cheeses / and reasons / to feign pain /
I am reminded / of the one and only
chance / I had / to see you live /
in concert / Fillmore West / 1969 /
cancelled / after a two-hour wait /
you were / too drunk / to go on /
even for one song / do you remember? /
I remember / and today makes the second time /
I missed you live.
About this poem
This is a epigrammatic memoir poem - and ode to my favorite band growing up The Doors - and to my visit to the gravesite of Jim Morrison.
