Wraith

Mum whispers "Sweet dreams,"
If only she knew what was lurking at night,
What hid under the bedsheets,
Waiting for the dim of lights,
It wants me to leave,
But also scream, shout and cry,
They say it's a silly thing to believe,
Must be a game played by the eyes,
Just wait until it haunts you in your sleep,
Because it knows you for your every lie.

About this poem

I got the idea for this poem after listening to Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics. I kept thinking about sweet dreams and how strange it is. You can't control your dreams, no matter what others say. Saying good night doesn't instantly make your night better. I just pictured myself being told "sweet dreams", knowing it means nothing as people don't know what's going on in your side of the story. I am also a big fan of horror stories, and I love the tension and lingering feeling it gives.
