8 shots
then nothing

a scream
doors open
someone, help!
he’s there on the ground

did you call 911? should I?
squad cars arrive either way
screaming down the block

“i
KNEW
he had a gun”

the ambulance arrives
no one gets in
reverse, down the one-way street

then just like that
the street is calm
a hatchback parallel parks
two students pass by, oblivious
chatting about whatever

I was in my backyard when I heard gunshots around the corner.
