Going Home
Michelle Brillhart 1977 (United States)
Dark thick ashen musk,
cozy and familiar
A dozen loves packed so tight,
one must go outside to change his mind
Making the most of the few moments
stolen in the name of unity
Chatter commotion and cachinnation
bulging at the seams,
replacing darkness with life.
Soon, noses go blind to the musk.
Carefree laughter flows like blood
through the veins to the heart
Once the laughter fades,
salutation and midwestern goodbyes
Along with wishes to not be a stranger,
the loves disperse the congregation,
scattering from the nest
and returning to the daily grind
The dark thick ashen musk returns,
awaiting its next breath of life
holding tightly to the laughter and love
that filled it, impatiently waiting for
its next chance to fulfill its duty,
the duty of being HOME.
