Mid-Night Raid

Philip Ndife 1980 (Nzam)

He jumped out of his dreamy sleep
In draws and climbed the steep
Steps for the room where lay
His children to wake them without delay

Sorrowful cries mixed with gun shots
Rent the quiet night as the plots
Of the blood thirsty aggressors held sway
And as they reaped fresh lives away
From robust trunks in the most hideous manner
As if God had left the earth for the hateful planner

Dismembered parts strewn about the room
Jostled him to reality; it was a night of doom
And his life froze within him as he watched the pool
Of blood ripple in the moon light as he stood like a fool

His children were all dead – dead forever
And where is his wife? Will he ever
See her again? And a force beyond him threw
Him into the pathless jungle as the cock crew.

About this poem

I wrote the poem after I had heard about the sorrowful tales, especially that of an elderly friend of mine from one of the villages, of how herders were raiding villages in Benue State of Nigeria.

Philip Ndife

I was born in Nzam my home town. While I was growing up, my father and mother usually told us folk stories especially during rainy season when our farm produce were sold. The stories oft lasted into the dead of the nights. This inspired my choice of reading English Language and Literature in the university. Today teach the subjects in secondary school and write poetry. more…
