Does the Nightingale Still Sing?

When storms unfurl the fury of their wind
And blast the trumpet of the thunderous cloud,
When bolts of lightning burn electric blend
And belt the earth beneath a blackened shroud,

I ask you, does the nightingale still sing?

I ask you, does the nightingale still sing
When air transports her to transcendent skies
And bears her up with grace beneath her wing
Then strikes with fright and flouts her desperate cries
And thrashes treasured nest with everything?

Tell me, does the nightingale still sing?

About this poem

Birds, particularly nightingales, are known for their songs, and in many poems are presented as ones who provide consolation through their singing. This poem raises the question of how nightingales themselves deal with fear and tragedy. The underlying meaning of the poem is left open for the reader to explore. The meter of the poem is iambic pentameter, and it possesses an ABAB rhyme structure.
