William Gurganus Road
Michael Ullom 2004 (Fayetteville)
I journey an awful path uncertain,
A worried traveled trail I fear to trek;
As I near my end she draws a curtain-
And I fear the wind, which cast to lay wreck-
A barrage of doubt on what held certain:
Upon end of my adventure, you'd be,
But now, drawn curtain, there it is, you, me;
A boundary that calls soul to roar as sea.
What is it that walks so slow behind me?
Hidden shadows and thought out fantasies,
But at the turn of sight, there's naught to see,
For what grows lusciously dies in disease;
It aged in glory but perished at "We;"
The sun hangs kindly in the evening sky!
Throughout his cycle, has he wondered why-
He reigns alone while the stars fill his eyes?
The sun tells me to follow this worn road-
And see what things may be different this time;
His red hue bleeds into the curtain showed-
To wish me well for what I hope is mine.
