Traitor

Traitor
I've been told that I am a traitor,
    perhaps I really am,
though I thought my motivations were good,
            my actions were all wrong.

I am left to be most penitent,
    under punishment most lenient,
        for the crimes which occurred.
I will no longer plead for release,
                that action I will cease.

Under the gaze of many eyes, I would be regarded as a traitor,
probably  in all reality, I am,
        my continued self-denial,
              driven by my shame.
