what demons dare surface?

with a million demons,
and an army of distorted shapes,
taking hostage his head,
sedatives were his best friend.

as the tingles journeyed through his body,
tension and anxiety fled,
in desperation to get out,
for another opportunity to come back along with their younglings.

the sedatives full took effect,
and "ah", his mind sighed.
ecstatic that the ugly faced demons had fled one more time.
his torture, toned down a notch.

but the tranquilizers,
after an exorcising voyage across his veins and arteries,
had returned, accomplished,
though, temporarily;

and heaped their bags,
exchanging high-fives for a job well done.
"goodbye",  they said to him.
"our work here is done."

and his body jerked awake,
to a surge of new demons.
and even more misshapen pictures.
and he asked himself,
"had they ever left?"

for there are limits to the strength a man has.
and boundaries to how much he could hold back.
a little aid from tranquilizers,
could set him in shape, perhaps
but, oh, can our bodies be cheated?

the ephemeral strength that pills dispense,
are doubtlessly incapable,
of beating the body,
to it's game of karma and boomerang.
how then does a man find strength?

in PEACE, a man finds STRENGTH.
such peace exuding from the knowledge,
that your pain had been borne,
by one who loved you wholly,
with the demons inside of you.

in SATISFACTION, a man finds STRENGTH.
embracing with smiles,
his meek possessions,
and saying to himself;
"it's enough for now"

in ENDURANCE, a man finds STRENGTH.
bearing down his tortures,
with a firm grip on FAITH.

and MAN is declared happiest.
bearing all of these possessions.
and with such pure and divine STRENGTH,
taking the lead;
what demons dare surface?

About this poem

My friend had many things to be depressed about. Things I genuinely do not wish to delve into. She almost never knew what peace felt like. Neither did she ever really feel strong, with so many responsibilities and unimaginable pressures weighing her down. Her escape routes were hard drugs and alcohol. As her friends, we tried to help her out of the addiction. As you guessed, though, it was near impossible. "I hate Reality", she always said. "And this is my only way out. " We arranged for her to see a therapist and rehabilitator. We never failed to assure her we were there for her, too. After years of rehab sessions coupled with so much love from friends (her family didn't care), she eventually got well. A s much as the experience made us all happy, it touched my heart SIGNIFICANTLY. I was thinking of how much she'd been through, one day, and I found myself writing it on paper. It's what birthed this poem. I intend to reach out to as many who be
