Lost John, in World War One

On the break of day I awoke to the sound of gunshots firing
I instantly clutched my gun. Glancing to my left I spotted my best friend John, shot in the chest.
The bullet punched its way through his neck, causing a hole that gushed with blood. Just like the others, he was expiring.
A pool of blood foamed around us. I held John, but like the others he was gone

Looking around, most my crew dead. We’re outnumbered, my heart filled with dread.
