its Christmas day
where the pretty lights are
hot chocolate cocoas
matching pajamas
singing Christmas carols
opening presents at the Christmas tree

all that visible through our next-door neighbor's window
while we cling together for warmth
our apartment empty
without decoration
without a Christmas tree
without presents
while we gather around at our small six corners table
eating a big meal mom made
Santa may have missed a house, but we never miss a family meal
