Study Room, laurier campus

Douglas Blair 1951 (London)

Used to run off, Sunday mornings
Study room, alone.
Students sleeping off
Last night’s bender.
Uncomplicated.
Unstructured.
Unbothered.
With pocket Testament
And frequently
Book of poems.
Did not inhabit the churches.
Rather alone and in touch.
With the Most High.
Really meant for
There to be business.
But the prayers were yammering
The jaws flapping with selfish
Petitions of fear or conundrum.
Then one nasty winter outing.
Got quiet. Tried to listen
For something. Someone.
And Father Above arrived.
“Ah Son, so you have closed
Your mouth.
Let’s build together
A Dialogue.
A Duality  OK.”
Doors of revelation
Flew open.
The likes of which
Never before experienced
In the pews.
Pastor spouting off
Some opinion,
Chuckling anecdote
A list of thou shalt nots.
Or how he spent his
Summer Vacation.
