Two Tall Buildings
They often kept my attention.
I stared at them from my classroom.
They often kept me wondering.
What were they for and who was there?
They often secured my visit.
When I realized what they stood for.
They inspired wonder and amazement.
Even as I shared the experience.
They caused my children to wonder.
They saw them for the first time.
They often are in my mind.
I can no longer view them.
They often will be in my mind.
The two tall buildings I grew to admire.
They are forever, gone, gone.
No more to view but always to share.
They are forever in my heart and mind.
About this poem
This poem is my reflection of the World Trade Centers after they were destroyed by terrorists on 9/11. I wrote it to convey my experience with the World Trade Centers including taking a group of young people from Birmingham, Alabama to New York City. I also wanted to acknowledge that my children who would see them for the very first time on 9/11 would not have the opportunity to experience what I did as a child and in my early adult life.
