The Fervor of Amorous Attraction: A Sonnet of Trepidation and Tranquility
Upon thy entrance to the hall of youth,
I greeted thee with salutation fair,
But trepidation and amorous truth,
Engaged my mind in acts most debonair.
Like billy goats in courtship's fervent fire,
I acted with a lunacy most base,
In hopes that I might exude a sire
Of alluring aroma, to win thy grace.
But as my apprehensions did assail,
I sought solace in my chambers' rest,
To alleviate my nervosity frail
And find a state of tranquility blessed.
So let us not the follies of the heart,
Let Love's madness tear our souls apart.
About this poem
This sonnet, written in complex and ornate language, explores the theme of love and its potential to drive one to madness. The speaker addresses their own behavior, akin to that of a billy goat in courtship, driven by a desire to exude an alluring aroma in the hopes of winning the affections of the person they have greeted. However, the speaker recognizes the foolishness of such actions and seeks refuge in their chambers to alleviate their nervosity and find a state of tranquility. The final lines serve as a cautionary reminder to not let the follies of the heart lead to the destruction of one's soul. more »
