Verses for Social Media
Mawphniang Napoleon 1993 (Ri Bhoi)
In this era of digital intercourse,
We find ourselves beset by malign force
That doth corrupt the mind and heart of man,
A scourge that doth repent all virtues lost.
These platforms hailed as heralds of advancement,
Do oft engender nought but estrangement,
And foster in the souls of men a miasma,
Of superficiality that doth corrupt the nation.
In truth, it is not the machinery to blame,
But rather man's own proclivity to misuse,
The gifts that science doth so readily proffer.
Thus, let us tread with circumspection,
And not succumb to this alluring bane,
The pernicious scourge of social media.
For in the end, all progress is but ephemeral,
And all that's left is man's own soul deceiving.
About this poem
The sonnet suggests that in the era of digital communication, we are faced with a negative force that corrupts the mind and heart of humanity. Social media platforms, which were once hailed as advancements, can actually lead to estrangement and a superficiality that harms society. The problem is not with the technology itself, but with human's tendency to misuse it. Therefore, it is important to approach these tools with caution and not fall victim to their negative influence. In the end, all progress is fleeting and what truly matters is the state of one's own soul. more »
