The Study

Deep within a wooded grove,
An ancient, cobbled byway wove.
Here, the ivied Manor lay.
Long unused, bequeathed to us,
Rustic, haunting, thick with dust.

Tucked inside the darkened halls,
With ancient nooks along the walls,
A long-forgotten study lies.
Locked behind twin oaken doors,
From where a musty odor pours.

I placed my hand upon the knob,
And felt my pulse begin to throb.
The chamber opened with a moan.
The floor groaned as I stepped,
As slowly through the door, I crept.

The room was dense, and thickly tomed.
Around the place my senses roamed,
In a trance at what I’d found.
Books and scrolls of every kind,
Ancient lore too long confined.

All at once there came a fright,
As one by one, the candles light!
My heart stopped beating as I froze.
I couldn’t breathe, my throat went dry,
My body seemed to mummify.

A pen rose from the corner desk,
By a ghostly hand, you’ve guessed.
A veil at once enveloped me.
Then, a scratching reached my ears,
Fulfilling all my worst of fears.

A lordly spirit resides here,
Among the books that he finds dear.
Eternally, he makes his notes.
Forever, here, he is entombed,
And I, with him, am ever doomed!
