ONE AGAINST ONE MILLION

ONE AGAINST ONE MILLION

Hail comrades, lend an ear.
Just sit still and have no fear,
While I relate to you a battle,
A very terrible and decisive battle.
It was fought, many years ago,
Against a very fearsome foe.

I was then, only ten years old,
When I fought against ten thousand, strong and bold.
They say that I trespassed on their soil.
They say, I disturbed them in their toil.

But then, as I was young and strong,
Always right, never wrong,
I little heeded their decree.
Such light words didn't bother me.

The magnitude of the multitude,
Did not matter to this dude.
This is a fellow who fears no foe;
A man whose middle name is Macho.
This is a being, so bad so bold,
After the Master made me, He smashed the mold.

But when I least expected it, those Boers,
They attached me in scores.
I felt the stings of their poisoned arrows;
I felt them down to my very toes.

But I was not slow to act.
There and then, I made a pact
To send those dogs to their graves,
As shamefully as wretched slaves.

Hot blood rushed into my head.
All those swines, I'll have them dead.
My face, turned horribly blue.
My eyes, they changed color too.
They lit up like lightening,
And the grinding of my teeth sounded like thundering.

Feathered creatures who could fly, flew away.
Sea creatures, swam to the ocean depths, away from the bay.
Even fierce four-legged beasts, fled the scene,
Frightened by the ferocity, of this fiend.

I struck out wild and fierce,
And although I had no arrows, with which to pierce
Them, I battered those terrors, front and back,
Like horses battering a racing track.

I trampled my foes, under my feet;
Of their bodies, I made mincemeat.
With one powerful sweep of my hand,
I ground hundreds, as fine as the desert sand.
I murdered old, middle-aged, and infants.
This barefoot boy, in short pants, battled BATTALIONS, OF BITING ANTS!

About this poem

As a child in the West Indies, we wore short pants and we often, inadvertently stood in ants' nests, with thousands of ants climbing up our legs. I wrote this as a teen to make it appear as major battle when it was not.
